Healthium Medtech, an India-based medical devices company founded in 1992 and formerly known as Sutures India, develops, manufactures, and sells products for surgical, post-surgical, and chronic care, including wound closure devices, consumables, arthroscopy, and advanced wound care solutions. The company serves over 90 countries, with its products used in one in five surgeries globally, and has expanded its presence from 50 countries since Apax Partners acquired a 99% stake in 2018, during which it pursued in-house R&D and strategic M&A. Global investment firm KKR agreed in 2024 to acquire a controlling stake in Healthium from an affiliate of Apax Partners via a special-purpose vehicle owned by its Asian Fund IV, outbidding a consortium of Mankind Pharma and ChrysCapital; the deal is valued at approximately INR70bn ($838.60m), though financial details were not officially disclosed. KKR views Healthium as a leading homegrown producer with a strong track record of quality products and a wide distribution network in India and globally, marking its latest investment in Indian healthcare alongside stakes in J B Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals, Max Healthcare, and Gland Pharma. Healthium CEO Anish Bafna, who holds a 1% stake, highlighted KKR's deep global healthcare expertise, Indian market knowledge, and operational strengths to support the next growth phase leveraging KKR's platform. Apax partner Steven Dyson noted the opportunity to build a global diversified MedTech platform from Healthium’s portfolio. The transaction, announced in May 2024, is subject to regulatory approvals and expected to close in Q3 2024. Jefferies and Kirkland & Ellis advised Apax and Healthium, while Moelis & Company, Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, and AZB & Partners advised KKR.

| Date | Stage | Investors | Raised | Deal Summary |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sep 2013 | Undisclosed stage | TPG (lead) | $23M | Healthium Medtech, previously Sutures India, is an Indian medical devices company specializing in surgical sutures, needles, and consumables, with significant exports to over 50 countries and a strong domestic presence serving 10,000+ hospitals. In 2017, TPG, holding 73% stake with CX Partners at 12%, sought to sell via Goldman Sachs, initially a 10-20% stake for $100M implying ~$500M valuation, later expanding to full controlling stake bids from firms like Boston Scientific, Medtronic, Carlyle, Advent, J&J, and B. Braun. By 2018, Apax Partners via Quinag Acquisition bought a controlling stake from TPG Growth, CX Partners, and founders for approximately $300-350M (Rs 1,950-2,000 crore), marking TPG's exit after five years of growth into a leading medtech platform. Post-Apax, Healthium expanded its portfolio and global OEM business; by 2021, it planned a $300-400M IPO at $1B valuation via ICICI Securities, CLSA, Credit Suisse, Nomura, leveraging healthcare sector buoyancy and competitor Poly Medicure's valuation gains. |
