|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jun 2022 | Series C | Senator Investment Group (lead); Teachers’ Venture Growth (lead); Jeffrey Vinik; The Kraft Group; Roy O. Disney; Mousse Partners; Emerald Development Managers; CHANEL | $120M | Evolved By Nature, a Boston-based biotechnology company founded in 2013, develops a proprietary library of Activated Silk™ molecules derived from natural silk protein to create sustainable alternatives to petrochemicals and fossil fuel-derived synthetics. The technology targets disruptions in supply chains for leather, apparel, personal care, and regenerative medicine by providing renewably sourced bioactive ingredients, therapeutics, and sustainable chemicals that enhance product performance and support the circular economy. On June 30, 2022, Evolved By Nature closed a $120 million Series C funding round led by Teachers’ Venture Growth (TVG), part of the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan Board, and Senator Investment Group. Existing investors participating included CHANEL, Emerald Development Managers, Jeffrey Vinik, Mousse Partners, Roy O. Disney, and The Kraft Group. The financing coincides with the launch of the company’s first full-scale production facility, enabling a ramp-up to 900 metric tons of annual Activated Silk™ production from a prior capacity of 150 tons by 2024. The funds will scale global sales of biodegradable, high-performance finishes adopted by fashion brands like Anya Hindmarch, nylon mills such as Alpine Creations and Apex Holdings, and leather tanneries including Richard Hoffmans GmbH & Co. KG, Cyclica Srl, and Curtidos Bengala. Proceeds will also advance Activated Silk skin barrier-enhancing ingredients as natural replacements for petrolatum and synthetic retinoids in personal care products, alongside pursuits in therapeutics for skin conditions. Evolved By Nature's Activated Silk technology aims to replace petrochemical coatings, potentially equating to 900 million jars of petrochemical-free skincare, 150 million square feet of biodegradable leather, finishes for 195 million pieces of performance apparel, or 7,200 metric tons of non-biodegradable surfactants. This reflects growing investor interest in next-gen materials, amid similar raises by competitors like MycoWorks ($125M Series C) and others in sustainable fashion and biotech. |
