Talend Acquisition

Talend was acquired by Qlik for an undisclosed price on 5 January 2023.

Before the acquisition Talend had raised $40M across 1 funding round.

Qlik, a leader in BI and analytics, acquired Talend, a major data integration vendor specializing in data transformation, quality, and governance, in May 2023. Both companies were owned by private equity firm Thoma Bravo, which had previously acquired Qlik for $3 billion in 2016 and Talend for $2.4 billion in 2021, positioning the transaction as more of a strategic merger under common ownership than a traditional acquisition. The deal closed following announcement of intent in early 2023, subject to regulatory approvals and works council consultation. The acquisition combines Qlik's analytics, AI, and machine learning strengths with Talend's data integration capabilities to offer a comprehensive, cloud-independent portfolio addressing data fragmentation, integration, governance, and quality needs. It enhances Qlik's full-stack data management offerings, filling gaps in data quality and governance, and supports customers in modernizing data architectures without legacy constraints or cloud lock-in. Post-acquisition, the combined entity under CEO Mike Capone continues investments in innovation and R&D. Talend brought over 7,000 customers and approximately $350 million in revenues to the deal, roughly half of Qlik's size. The move aligns with Qlik's M&A strategy evolution from smaller tuck-in acquisitions to integrating a larger player like Talend, strengthening its market position in data and analytics.

Dec 2013Undisclosed stageBpifrance (lead); IRIS (lead); Silver Lake; Sumeru Equity Partners$40MTalend is an open-source data integration company based in Los Altos, California, with offices in Paris, specializing in data integration, data management, and business process management, with a focus on big data technologies like Hadoop. On December 11, 2013, Talend raised $40 million from lead investors Bpifrance and Iris Capital, with participation from existing investor Silver Lake Sumeru (also referred to as Silver Lake), bringing total funding to $101.6 million across prior rounds. Bpifrance, a French public investment house, specializes in supporting companies toward initial public offerings, and Talend indicated plans to pursue an IPO with this capital. The funding will support aggressive expansion into the big data market, investments in product roadmap particularly for Hadoop technologies, inside sales, and marketing to drive growth from its open-source model, which sees tens of thousands of daily downloads. Talend's CEO Mike Tuchen highlighted economics as a key driver, noting that new data processing and analytics approaches are 100 times cheaper than traditional data warehouse methods, enabling innovations in handling multi-source data with unified connectors, deployments, management, and monitoring. The company eventually went public via IPO, was taken private, and acquired by Qlik in 2023.
