| Aug 2025 | Secondary | Mitsubishi (lead) | $420M | $3.9B | Mitsubishi Corporation acquired a 30% joint venture interest in Copper World, a copper-molybdenum-silver mining project located in Tucson, Arizona, from Hudbay Minerals Inc. for $600 million, with $420 million contributed at closing on January 9, 2026, and $180 million to be contributed within 18 months. The transaction valued the 100% project at approximately $1.16 billion based on analyst consensus net asset value estimates as of August 2025. Copper World is a fully permitted greenfield copper mine project with ore reserves of 2 million tonnes and a resource estimate of 5 million tonnes, expected to commence production around 2029. Phase 1 is projected to generate approximately 100,000 tonnes of annual copper production at peak with a 20-year mine life. On a 100% basis using a copper price of $3.75 per pound, the pre-feasibility study projects an after-tax net present value of $1.1 billion and an internal rate of return of 19%. Mitsubishi will also fund its pro-rata 30% share of future equity capital contributions required to construct the project, with total Phase 1 capital costs estimated at $1.3 billion. The deal increased Hudbay's levered project internal rate of return to approximately 90% and reduced the company's estimated remaining capital contribution to approximately $200 million, with capital contributions deferred until 2028 at the earliest. |
