OneTrust funding rounds
| Date | Stage | Investors | Raised | Valuation | Deal Summary |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jul 2023 | Undisclosed stage | Generation Investment Management (lead); Sands Capital Ventures | $150M | $4.5B | OneTrust, founded in 2016 and based in Atlanta, provides a trust intelligence cloud platform that helps organizations manage data privacy, security, ethics, ESG requirements, and compliance. The platform enables responsible use of data and AI, protects privacy rights, implements cybersecurity programs, supports social impact goals, and fosters a culture of trust. It serves over 14,000 customers globally, including half of the Global 2,000, and ranks #1 in worldwide market share for data privacy software per IDC's 2022 report. OneTrust employs over 2,000 people across multiple regions and was ranked #24 on the Forbes Cloud 100 list. On July 24, 2023, OneTrust announced a $150 million funding round led by Generation Investment Management, with participation from existing investor Sands Capital. This brought total funds raised to over $1 billion and established a current post-money valuation of $4.5 billion, down from $5.1 billion in its prior 2020-2021 Series C and extension. CEO Kabir Barday noted the funding supports platform innovation amid rising demand driven by evolving regulations and AI initiatives. Existing investors include Insight Partners, Coatue, TCV, and Franklin Templeton. The company reported doubling its annual recurring revenue to $400 million since 2021, highlighting sustained growth and achievement of free cash flow milestones. Despite laying off 950 employees the prior year, OneTrust more than doubled its customer base since 2020 to over 14,000. This round reflects market leadership in trust intelligence software, positioning OneTrust to accelerate growth in privacy, security, and governance amid a challenging venture environment where down rounds like this and Snyk's became common. |
| Mar 2023 | Secondary | Irving Investors | - | - | Irving Investors, a secondaries-focused investment firm, acquired OneTrust shares in a private secondary transaction at the end of March 2023. The terms of the trade were not disclosed and no valuation was published, and OneTrust itself did not receive the proceeds because existing holders sold their stock. The purchase gave Irving a minority position in a company that had last priced a primary round in 2021 and then went on to raise USD 150 million led by Generation Investment Management in July 2023. OneTrust was founded in 2016 by Kabir Barday and is headquartered in Atlanta. It evolved from a privacy compliance tool into a platform for data governance, risk and AI governance used by enterprises worldwide. |
| Apr 2021 | Series C | SoftBank Group (lead); Franklin Templeton | $210M | $5.3B | OneTrust announced on 8 April 2021 a $210 million extension of its Series C round, led by new investor SoftBank Vision Fund 2 with additional investment from Franklin Templeton. The extension brought the Series C to $510 million and total funds raised to $920 million, at a valuation of $5.3 billion, following the $300 million tranche led by TCV in December 2020. Franklin Templeton's Matthew Cioppa said the firm was thrilled to back the team as it broadens the platform and strengthens its lead in the market. OneTrust chief executive Kabir Barday called the extension a testament to the enterprise software market of trust the company is building. OneTrust was founded in 2016 and is based in Atlanta. Its platform covers privacy, security, data governance, ethics and compliance, third-party risk and ESG programs, and the company reported more than 10,000 customers and about 2,000 employees at the time of the round. |
| Dec 2020 | Series C | TCV (lead); Coatue; Insight Partners | $300M | $5.1B | OneTrust, founded in 2016 in Atlanta, provides the leading privacy, security, and data governance technology platform, helping over 7,500 customers including half of the Fortune 500 comply with regulations like GDPR and CCPA. The company achieved unicorn status in 2019 and topped the 2020 Inc. 500 list for fastest-growing private companies, with remarkable historical revenue growth exceeding 48,000% between 2016 and 2019. It has been recognized as a leader in Forrester Waves for Privacy Management Software (Q1 2020) and Third-Party Risk Management Platforms (Q4 2020). On December 21, 2020, OneTrust announced a $300 million Series C funding round led by new investor TCV, with participation from existing investors Insight Partners and Coatue. The round valued the company at a post-money valuation of $5.1 billion, nearly doubling from its $2.7 billion Series B valuation earlier in 2020 and up from $1.3 billion in 2019. This brought total funding raised in the prior 18 months to $710 million across three rounds. OneTrust was not actively seeking capital but accepted TCV's approach to update its valuation for employee stock currency, acquisitions, and growth initiatives. Funds will support organic expansion through hiring and product development, as well as inorganic growth via tuck-in and larger deals in adjacent areas. At the time, the company had around 1,500 employees and had completed four acquisitions. TCV, a prominent growth investor with successes like Airbnb and Netflix, highlighted OneTrust's unprecedented scale relative to capital raised. The platform's market position as the most widely used in its category positions it for long-term dominance amid rising global privacy and compliance demands. |
| Feb 2020 | Series B | Coatue (lead); Insight Partners | $210M | $2.7B | OneTrust, a privacy management software company providing a technology platform for privacy, security, data governance, and compliance, raised $210 million in a Series B funding round on February 20, 2020, led by Coatue and Insight Partners. This followed a $200 million Series A round in July 2019 at a $1.3 billion valuation, bringing total funding to $410 million and elevating the post-money valuation to $2.7 billion. The company, founded in 2016 and based in Atlanta, had grown rapidly, expanding from 600 employees and 2,000 customers in February 2019 to 1,500 employees and 5,000 customers by early 2020, including half of the Fortune 500. The funding was intended to fuel global scaling of services, support, and partner ecosystem, while adding new platform capabilities through organic and inorganic innovation amid rising demand driven by regulations like CCPA. OneTrust's CEO Kabir Barday highlighted investments to meet widespread demand, with proceeds providing capital for growth opportunities despite substantial Series A funds remaining unspent. Investors like Coatue's Thomas Laffont and Insight Partners' Richard Wells emphasized the platform's value for efficient privacy programs at scale. This round more than doubled the prior valuation, reflecting explosive growth and market traction in the burgeoning privacy tech sector, positioning OneTrust to rival established security firms. By late 2020, OneTrust raised a $300 million Series C led by TCV, nearly doubling valuation again to over $5 billion, with total funding reaching $710 million and serving over 7,500 customers across 12 global offices. |
| Jul 2019 | Series A | Insight Partners (lead) | $200M | $1.3B | OneTrust is a data privacy, security, compliance, and third-party risk management software platform founded in 2016, helping organizations adhere to regulations like GDPR, CCPA, and ISO 27001 through automation features such as 'right to be forgotten' and 'do not sell'. On July 11, 2019, OneTrust closed a $200 million Series A funding round led by Insight Partners, valuing the company at $1.3 billion post-money. The three-year-old bootstrapped startup, with a leadership team including alumni from AirWatch (acquired by VMware for $1.54 billion), used the funds to drive growth, product development, and scale support ahead of CCPA enforcement. At the time, OneTrust served over 3,000 customers across 100 countries. The round marked one of the largest Series A financings, tying with AirWatch's prior raise, reflecting investor confidence in OneTrust's market position amid rising privacy demands. Insight Partners, a global VC and PE firm with over $20 billion in assets, highlighted OneTrust's strategic vision and execution in privacy and compliance. |
