In September 2025, Citigroup agreed to sell a 25% equity stake in Banamex to Fernando Chico Pardo and members of his family for approximately $2.3 billion (42 billion Mexican pesos), based on a price-to-book ratio of 0.80 times Banamex's local GAAP book value at closing. The transaction was completed on December 15, 2025, after obtaining approvals from Mexico's financial and competition authorities. Following the closing, Chico Pardo was appointed Chairman of Grupo Financiero Banamex, while Manuel Romo continued as CEO and Ignacio Deschamps remained as Chairman of Banco Nacional de México. The sale represents a significant step in Citigroup's strategic divestiture of its Mexican consumer banking operations and the planned initial public offering of Banamex, which Citi originally acquired in 2001 for $12.5 billion.
