Apr 2021Undisclosed stageEvolve HealthCare Partners (lead); Schroders Capital-Schroder British Opportunities Trust, managed by Schroders Capital, announced on 16 April 2021 that it had invested in Cera Care as part of a new funding round led by the pan-European healthcare private equity firm Evolve HealthCare Partners. Neither the size of the round nor the trust's contribution was disclosed. Cera said the money would be used to advance its technology platform and to scale its service footprint by acquiring small and mid-sized home care providers across the UK. At the time of the investment Cera employed close to 6,000 staff across more than 70 offices in England, Scotland and Wales and delivered over 30,000 care visits a day, making it one of the largest home care providers in the country. The company was founded in 2016 and pairs an employed carer workforce with software that records observations at each visit and flags likely deterioration, with revenue coming largely from local authority and NHS contracts. Schroders Capital added a further investment in August 2022 when Cera raised approximately $320 million of equity and debt, and the holding was valued at £6.2 million in the trust's accounts at 31 March 2026.

In February 2020, Cera raised GBP 50 million in a Series Unknown round led by Kairos HQ, with the motivation to enhance its digital home healthcare solutions; investors including Guinness Ventures and Yabeo were involved in its earlier May 2018 Series A of USD 17 million. A separate Debt Financing round occurred in March 2020 also led by Kairos HQ for similar growth purposes. Cera continued raising capital in later rounds, including GBP 130 million (approx. $160M) in August 2022 led by Kairos HQ and USD 150 million debt in January 2025.
May 2018Series AGuinness Ventures (lead); Kairos HQ (lead); Yabeo (lead); Credo Ventures; Earlymarket; Nexenai Capital$17MCera is a London-based technology-enabled home care startup that launched in November 2016, providing in-home services including on-demand care, palliative care, dementia care, private nursing, and live-in care, primarily private pay with some UK system funding. The company uses technology to match carers with users, digitalize logistics, track records in real-time, and predict health risks to prevent deterioration and reduce hospitalizations. Cera raised $17 million in a Series A round in May 2018, comprising equity and debt, from investors including Guinness Asset Management (via its EIS fund), Yabeo, Kairos HQ, and follow-on seed investors such as Credo Ventures, Earlymarket, and others. Guinness VCT, Kairos HQ, and Yabeo participated as noted leads. Cera planned to use the funding for UK expansion beyond London into Manchester, Leeds, and Birmingham via a 'buy and build' strategy acquiring struggling homecare agencies, international growth into Germany, team growth, and further AI development including its chatbot Martha. The round followed seed funding totaling around $4.1 million, including $1.6 million in November 2016, $1.8 million led by Credo Ventures in April 2017, and $650,000 from Auriens in August 2017. Additional developments included advisory board addition of Sir Nick Clegg, product hires from Tinder and Liberty Global, NHS 111 data integration efforts, Amazon Alexa integration, and a Daily Mail partnership.

Mears Care
Radcliffe Home Help Services
Description
Mears Care is the domiciliary care division of Mears Group, the London-listed housing and social care company headquartered in Gloucester. The business delivered home care visits to elderly and vulnerable people under contracts with local authorities and health bodies across England, Wales and Scotland, providing personal care, medication support and companionship in customers' own homes. Mears built the division through acquisition from the late 1990s onwards, and at the point of sale the English and Welsh operation employed around 1,500 people across 18 branches and generated revenue of more than GBP 30 million a year. Income came almost entirely from publicly commissioned care packages paid at hourly rates set by councils. Persistent underfunding of the sector meant the division did not earn an adequate return for its parent, and Mears Group resolved in January 2020 to exit domiciliary care entirely in order to concentrate on its housing management and maintenance business. The England and Wales operation was sold to Cera in February 2020 and the Scottish operation followed in September 2020.
Radcliffe Home Help Services is an English domiciliary care agency operating in Nottinghamshire. The business provided home help and personal care visits to elderly and disabled clients living in their own homes, covering support with washing, dressing, medication, meal preparation and companionship. Like most independent regional care agencies of its size it was funded principally through local authority commissioned care packages, supplemented by privately paying clients, and charged on an hourly visit basis. It was a small operator run with paper records, whiteboards and manual rostering rather than digital care management systems, which was typical of the fragmented British home care market. The company was acquired in early 2019 by the London-based technology-enabled care provider Cera, which set out to consolidate small regional agencies and migrate them onto its own digital platform. The consideration was described as a six-figure sum and was not otherwise disclosed.
