Jan 2024SecondaryLyondellBasell (lead)$500M$1.4BNational Petrochemical Industrial Company (NATPET), based in Saudi Arabia, operates a propylene and polypropylene complex in Yanbu Industrial City with an annual polypropylene production capacity of approximately 400,000 tons. The company was established in 2009 and produces a wide range of polypropylene products for various applications, leveraging LyondellBasell's Spheripol polypropylene technology under license from majority owner Alujain Corporation. On January 16, 2024, LyondellBasell announced an agreement to acquire a 35% interest in NATPET from Alujain Corporation for approximately $500 million. The transaction, subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions, includes existing assets and planned growth projects. It positions LyondellBasell to expand its core polypropylene business through access to advantaged feedstocks and additional marketing capacity in a strategic region. Alujain and LyondellBasell are evaluating a potential new propane dehydrogenation and polypropylene facility at the NATPET site, pending a final investment decision, aligned with Saudi Arabia's 2060 carbon reduction strategy. LyondellBasell CEO Peter Vanacker highlighted the investment as a way to grow around assets with lasting advantages, combining LYB's technology and market positions with Alujain's operational excellence.
