DateStageInvestorsRaisedValuationDeal Summary
Jan 2024Undisclosed stageOcean 14 Capital--Ocean 14 Capital Fund 1 invested in Calysta during 2024, joining the shareholder register of the methane-fermentation single-cell protein producer as part of the fund's alternatives to fish protein theme. The fund recorded the transaction year as 2024 in its 2024 impact report and did not disclose the amount, the instrument, the stake acquired or the valuation, and it did not publish a standalone press release. Ocean 14 Capital said its investment included a budget allocation for the development of a decarbonisation plan at Calysta, which it agreed as a component of the impact action plan attached to the deal. The investment rationale is the direct substitution of fishmeal in aquaculture feed: Calysta estimates that FeedKind replaces fishmeal at a ratio of about 1 to 1.1, and Ocean 14 Capital calculates that each tonne of FeedKind displaces roughly 3.2 tonnes of whole wild fish. Calysta was founded in 2011 and ferments methane with naturally occurring microorganisms to make a 68 percent crude protein feed ingredient that requires negligible land and water. Its first industrial plant was built in China through Calysseo, a 50:50 joint venture with the animal nutrition group Adisseo, with nameplate capacity of 20,000 tonnes a year. FeedKind received formal approval from China's agriculture ministry for use in aquaculture feeds on 31 January 2024, and the joint venture produced about 1,787 tonnes during the year, displacing an estimated 1,079 tonnes of fishmeal on Calysta's share. The company has operations in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and China, and the joint venture employed around 160 people including factory staff and contractors. Management's case targets thirteen plants and more than 800,000 tonnes of annual capacity over time.

The company announced a $30 million investment from BP Ventures on June 27, 2019, to support worldwide rollout of FeedKind and improve global food security amid land and water scarcity challenges. This investment included a strategic partnership for gas and power supply, with BP Ventures' David Hayes joining Calysta's board. The funding aligns with the specified investors, as BP Ventures participated, and sources note prior or concurrent involvement from heavyweights like Adisseo, Aqua-Spark, Temasek Holdings, Mitsui & Co., Cargill, Municipal Employee Retirement System of Michigan, Bessemer Trust, Walden Riverwood Ventures, and Pangaea Ventures. By mid-2019, Calysta had raised over $600 million cumulatively. FeedKind was already in production in England, with plans for multiple global plants leveraging BP's operational expertise. The investment focuses on scaling production of resource-efficient protein to address protein demand without expanding traditional agriculture.
